Rural Women's Fight for Access to Education. Through Whatsapp
Whilst in most western countries social media platforms like Whatsapp are mainly used for social or business interaction. In many rural parts of Zimbabwe, where the majority of rural women are deprived from digital facilities and basic of educational facilities, have found ways to rise above the digital gap through the social app.Whatsapp is one of the cheapest forms of communication in Zimbabwe . Local mobile internet services have failed to provide reliable network in most rural areas. In the recent pandemic Whatsapp has proven to be more effective in providing an educational platform for the Covid19 pandemic alert response initiative. Hundreds of educational groups have been created to provide thousands of rural women with access to information and educational resources on health, business, humanitarian aid, for the pandemic crisis. Rural women who are farmers are using the group platforms to sell their produce and offer delivery services to their local customers. Educational learning groups for women, youths and children offer kindergarten to K12 programs, as well as professional short courses through tutorial groups which include short, videos and audios sessions.
